Jacques Heim, a fashion designer, was the first person to come up with a design that motivated the making of modern bikinis. In May 1946, the Paris-based designer, released a two-piece swim suit, which he named Atome. The fact that it covered the navel made it attract less attention.

In July the same year, clothing designer Louis Reard introduced a skimpy version of Heim’s idea. Reard named his product bikini after the Bikini Atoll. He made sure the covering revealed the navel and rarely covered the whole breasts and buttocks. He was not able to get a professional runway model to display it. The designer had to hire a nude dancer from Casino de Paris to model it.

It was frowned upon due to its nudity and some countries banned it. However, it was slowly accepted after film stars like Ursula Andress wore them while on public beaches and were filmed and photographed in them.

This is the origin of the bikini that you love while on the beach or in the swimming pool.
