Opposition leader Raila Odinga, whether or not he vies for the presidency in 2022, will obviously be out to ensure that his party gets most of the seats in the election, a privilege currently being enjoyed by President Uhuru Kenyatta’s ruling Jubilee Party.

Raila will also be seeking to continue his dominance in his Luo Nyanza bedrock, and will go all out to ensure that all elected members are from his Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

But this is set to be an uphill task which could be impossible, judging by the Jubilee’s operations that have since seen him lose some of the areas he initially dominated.

Having successfully made inroads into the former Prime Minister’s Coast, Kisii and Western Kenya zones, the party will now be seeking to shake him in his home turf, and will surely make attempts to grab some seats in the lakeside region.

Using former leaders and nomination losers in the previous elections who feel shortchanged in the primaries, and who are now out for revenge, the party will make attempts to get some seats in the region.

The move, if successful, will mark the start of the end of Raila’s political popularity and he will be up in arms to protect his zone and keep what he believes belongs to him.

Raila, therefore, has to lay out strong measures to ensure that his party remains at the helm of the region and has to outsmart the likes of former Ndhiwa lawmaker Agostino Neto who has been heard openly backing Deputy President William Ruto's presidential bid in the race.

This is because Neto and others in the group could be used by Ruto who will remain at the helm of the party after the retirement of President Uhuru Kenyatta to mobilise grass root support for Jubilee candidates.

His other worry is Jubilee Secretary General Raphael Tuju, a Nyanza native who has always been on the opposite side, and will again be out to ensure that Jubilee successfully ventures into the region.

Also, Jubilee being in power will have the required finances unlike his party and must do his best to resist the invasion.
