Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has announced a crackdown on water cartels in the region.
Sonko on Thursday held a consultative meeting with the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) new board to brainstorm on ways to end the activities of the cartels.
He said that the private individuals and a notorious Member of the County Assembly have been frustrating his efforts to ensure residents get clean water.
He noted that the city has a demand of 750 million litres per day but the county government can only supply 525 million litres a day.
"As you all saw in the recent documentary by KTN, these ruthless cartels have gone to the extent of selling contaminated water to residents. I am determined to bring this impunity to an end, and guarantee all our residents of an adequate supply of clean and safe water, as it is their constitutional right, and the responsibility of the County government to provide this commodity," he said.
The governor disclosed that some of the engineers at the company have been colluding with the cartels to frustrate the residents.
Sonko noted that his government wants to complete the Northern Collector Tunnel through funding by the World Bank and French Development Agency.
He said that the national government has plans to allocated Sh21 billion towards the project. adding that his government has set aside Sh50 million to NCWSC as well as Sh50 million to Athi Water Services Board for the smooth running of its operations.
