Calls a referendum are ill-time and ill-advised, allies of Deputy President William Ruto have said.
The leaders have dismissed ThirdWay Alliance Party Leader Ekuro Aukot’s Punguza Mizigo.
Speaking during church fundraiser presided over by Dr. Ruto in Machakos County, the leaders said that the push for a referendum is dead on arrival. Ruto, however, steered clear of the push for a referendum.
During the event, Machakos Town MP Victor Munyaka launched a scathing attack against Aukot terming his push for a referendum a waste of time and effort.
He said that the country has no time for constitutional amendments. He noted that the leader wants to derail President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Big Four Agenda through the new proposals.
“Who will invest in a country that changes the Constitution after every five years just to suit someone’s interests?” he asked, as quoted by Daily Nation.
Kangundo MP Fabian Kyule echoed his sentiments saying that it is not the time for changing any laws of the country.
On her part, Kitui South counterpart Ms. Racheal Nyamai said that she will only support the referendum if it doesn’t root for the removal of the post of the women representative seat.
The second in command decided to steer off the issue when he made his remarks.
Over 40 women leaders allied to Ruto also dismissed Aukot. The leaders, who spoke at Kaaga Synod on Friday, promised to shoot down the Bill as soon as it is presented in the house.
Under the umbrella ‘Inua Mama, Jenga Taifa’ they said that they are not happy with the fact that the two-third general rule has been ignored.
