According to the study, eating fish-lean, oily, fatty or white fish thrice a week helps reduce the risk of colorectal cancer by 12 per cent.

Colorectal cancer, which recently killed Kibra MP Ken Okoth, affects colon and rectum.

Fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids.

The study found out that omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids help reduce risks of colorectal cancer. The findings of this research were published in a Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology on July 25.

“In an analysis of dietary patterns of participants in the study, we found regular consumption of fish, at recommended levels, to be associated with a lower risk of colorectal cancer, possibly through exposure to n-3 LC-PUFA,” reads part of the findings quoted by the Standard.

Eating fish has other health benefits to a person's body like a reduction in cardiovascular diseases.

Cancer has become a great concern in Kenya, with various groups of people calling on the government to declare it a national disaster.

On Monday, Bomet County Governor Dr Joyce Laboso died at the Nairobi Hospital from cancer.

Various prominent people had previously perished from the disease including former Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore.
