Abonyo was among residents and leaders who witnessed the installation of former Deputy Governor Hillary Kipng’eno Barchok as governor.

After being sworn in, Governor Barchok gave his speech before finally recognising the people present. He recognised Abonyo with a view of having him wave to the crowd but members of the public would here none of it.

They ululated, shouted and whistled which in turn forced the governor to call him to the podium so that he could address members of the public.

“The second person I want to recognize your Excellency is the husband of our departed governor Mr Edwin Abonyo,” said governor Barchok before Abonyo stood up to wave.

The claps, ululations, shouts, and whistles continued until the governor was forced to call him forward. “Kuja (come). Let me give him one minute to say jambo (Hi),” said the governor after being overwhelmed by the noise from the crowd.

“Hamjambo watu wa Bomet? Nimefurahi sana kupata hii nafasi kuongea na nyinyi tena. (How are you people of Bomet? I am happy to find this opportunity to speak to you again), he said.

He assured the new governor that his family will stand with him as he discharges his duties to the people of Bomet.
