This comes amid growing calls from politicians for the expansion of the executive, the latest one being from former Head of Public Service Francis Muthaura earlier in the week.

But Koigi now warns that if realized, the nation will be back to the dark days, as there will be no formidable opposition, with all leading politicians being accommodated in government.

He says that if successful, with everyone in the opposition, it will be very easy for the government to establish a dictatorial system of government.

"Hii ikifaulu na tuwe na kila mtu katika serikali nchi itakuwa na udikteta. (If it succeeds and everyone lands in the government we will have dictatorship)," he said on Saturday.

The former Subukia lawmaker was speaking on Radio Sauti Ya Mwananchi on Saturday evening, where he said that the nation should not be discussing how to make more positions for now.

He added that he has not seen anything wrong with the constitution as it is, but if there are any needed changes, they should revolve around further strengthening the democracy.

"Tuwe na mabadiliko ya kuboresha demokrasia, hayo ndiyo tunataka. (We need changes to better the democracy, that's want we want)," he added.

Apart from the executive expansion referendum push, there is another one being led by Third Way Alliance leader Ekuru Aukot, which seeks to reduce elective seats, dubbed 'Punguza Mizigo'.
