Deputy President William Ruto has poked holes into Raila Odinga's honesty in the fight against corruption, questioning his decision to ignore court invitations to testify for John Githongo, a former PS accused of defaming Chris Murungaru over Anglo Leasing case.

Last week, a court sitting in Nairobi slapped Githongo with Sh27 million fine, after failing to qualify his allegations against Mr Murungaru. Mr Murungaru had sued Githongo for defaming and the case has dragged for the last 13 years.

On Saturday in Kisumu, Mr Odinga accused courts of being used to sabotage the fight against graft, questioning the decision by the court to fine Mr Githongo for whistleblowing.

“How can a whistle blower be penalised for helping the country to save public funds. This is a mockery of the law,” Raila told Saturday Standard in Kisumu.

But at Embu on Sunday, Dr Ruto accused Mr Odinga of propagating propaganda in the fight against corruption. He insisted that Mr Odinga had an opportunity to testify in favour of Githongo but kept on skipping invitations by the court to do so.

He said: "You cannot move from one funeral to another, spreading propaganda in the fight against corruption. You were given chance to testify in favour of Githongo, but 13 years later, you've never been seen in court. Mr Githongo is now in deep problems because you cheated him to spread propaganda. Go back to court and testify."

Dr Ruto has been clashing with the state in the fight against corruption, and has often accused unnamed individuals of targeting his allies for the sake of sabotaging his 2022 presidential ambitions. More often than not, he has been blaming Mr Odinga in the ongoing graft purge.
