Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua has said that the county could host World Cup events in the near future.
Speaking in Mavoko sub-county, on Thursday, Mutua said that his plan is to construct nine stadiums by December 2019 to enable the county host international events.
"Once the stadiums are complete, Machakos will from next year be able to host an international event in the nine modern IAFF and FIFA approved stadiums," said the governor.
"That, after all, is what development is all about. Building infrastructure, creating employment and opportunities for our great people of Kenya," he added.
The stadiums already under construction are in Athi River(Mavoko), Masii, Ikombe and Kinyui.
"The other stadiums' work will start in July, this year in Mitaboni, Kangundo, Ekalakala, Kalama and Machakos town," he further stated.
Mutua also noted that the stadiums are set to engage the area youth and help grow their talents in structured ways.
"These stadiums, such as one in Mavoko whose ongoing work I have inspected will feature a youth academy and a social hall to be used by our youth," he noted.
He promised to uplift the standards of Machakos sub-counties and promote tourism.
