The Rift Valley Technical Training Institute (RVTTI) emerged tops in this year’s African competition for technical colleges and universities.
With the win, the Eldoret-based technical institution won a Sh10 million worth of tender to supply spare parts to China.
According to the institutions’ Principal Edwin Tarno, they are expecting to start manufacturing the spare parts within the next 6 months.
“We emerged first in the competition that included other 7 African counties among them Ghana, Uganda and Nigeria,” said Tarno.
“With the win, we will now use the very same students to manufacture the spare parts which will be exported to China. We’ve already signed an agreement,” he added.
The win, according to the RVTTI Principal, validates training being offered across the country in the technical institutions.
He said the institution which is the centre of excellence in technical training for the East African Community (EAC) has the ability to manufacture any kind of spare parts to be used in a vehicle and farm implements.
Tarno further admitted that the country has an ability to manufacture spare parts but only if manufacturers work on the ability to get expertise, accelerate their production and improve on the quality of the component being manufactured.
“The critical part is how to harness the technologies we have locally to reach the level of quality and here is where the government come in and try to set small industries that can be used as an example rather than leaving it to individuals which can be expensive,” he noted.
