A section of Mt Kenya politicians has renewed the 2022 succession debate assuring Deputy President William Ruto of their pledge to support his presidential bid.
Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu said that nothing will make them abandon their pledge to support the DP.
Speaking to journalists at his office in Kiambu on Monday, Waititu said they will rally Mt Kenya voters behind Ruto because he stood firm with President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The county boss said that the DP has been loyal to President Kenyatta, adding that his loyalty must be rewarded.
He further argued that some leaders would have betrayed Kenyatta if they were in Ruto’s shoes.
“We (Mt Kenya) will stand with the DP because of his loyalty to President Kenyatta and those doubting it should wait and see,” he said.
Waititu argued that the interests of the Mt Kenya region will be in safer hands if DP Ruto succeeds President Kenyatta in 2022.
The Kiambu governor asked the DP not to listen to the propaganda being spread some people in regards to the 2022 polls.
“We made a pledge and we will honour it when the time comes,” he added.
Last month, Ruto called on politicians to stop engaging in the 2022 debate, noting that no one owes him a debt.
Political pundits argue that the 2022 succession debate will take new shape following the famous March 9 handshake between President Kenyatta and opposition chief Raila Odinga.
Some of the pundits argue that the handshake is likely to work against DP Ruto’s 2022 presidential bid.
