Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei said the appointment would now allow Raila to play politics at 'international stage', adding that he should exit local scene.

" Your excellency I want to thank you for appointing that man (Raila) to AU. Next ensure Kalonzo Musyoka goes to Nigeria and Musalia Mudavadi goes to South Africa. Let them allow us develop the country," he said.

Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro added: " It's good that he has now a job. This is bigger than Kenyan leadership. Let him now allow William Ruto to manage the country."

Among the responsibilities of Mr. Odinga will be coordinating infrastructural development in Africa by mobilising common strategy for member states.

On Saturday, President Uhuru Kenyatta and his DP William Ruto lauded Raila's latest appointment, insisting that he will be at pole position to improve infrastructure in the country.

While the March 9th handshake contributed to the appointment, a section of presidents led by John Magufuli (Tanzania) and Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa are said to have lobbied for Raila.

Although the position my not technically kick Raila Odinga out of 2022 picture, Ruto's team believes that it would be his right exit strategy from Kenya's politics.

"Let him now work hard and develop Africa. These local politics should be left to us," added Kipchumba Murkomen.

But a strategic Uhuru steered clear of the debate on succession, insisting that elected leaders should work towards improving life of electorates.
