Buzeki’s defection to Chama Cha Mashinani (CCM) has altered the equation of Uasin Gishu's 2022 gubernatorial race.
Officially known as Zedekiah Kiprop Bundotich, Buzeki lost to incumbent Governor Jackson Mandago during the Jubilee primaries and later in the general elections in 2017 and was termed as the frontrunner in Mandago’s succession politics until he decamped to CCM.
In order to clinch the seat in 2022, Buzeki needs these three politicians from the county who are the opinion shapers and will play a major role in who will become the next governor of Uasin Gishu.
1. Deputy President William Ruto
Ruto hails from Uasin Gishu and enjoys the support of nearly all the residents of this county. As witnessed in Bomet County and other parts of Ruto’s strongholds in 2017 general elections, any of his critics find it hard in clinching any seat.
If Ruto will not endorse Buzeki to succeed Mandago, then, chances of Buzeki becoming a governor in 2022 are minimal. Buzeki should, therefore, consider returning to Ruto’s camp if at all he wants to clinch the much-coveted seat in 2022.
2. Governor Jackson Mandago
Kenya’s politics is about endorsements and succession. It is in the public domain that Mandago has performed well as a governor and his opinion on whom should succeed him will contribute to determining the next governor of Uasin Gishu.
3. Oscar Sudi
The Kapseret legislator is a strong influencer when it comes to Rift Valley politics. Although Sudi has always rubbished claims that he is eyeing the county’s top seat, his presence in the race will definitely deny Buzeki the chance of rising to the gubernatorial seat. Sudi is more powerful and enjoys more support of Uasin Gishu residents compared to Buzeki.
