The Kisumu Water and Sanitation Company Limited (KIWASCO) is in the process of coming up with plastic water meters.
This move is aimed at reducing the loss resulting from the high rate of vandalizing metal water meters.
“Due to many reported cases of meter vandalism in the neighbourhoods of Migosi, Kenya Re, Car Wash, Lolwe among others, KIWASCO shall in due course be changing the current meters to plastic ones to reduce the vandalism incidences,” reads part of a Statement released by the Company.
According to KIWASCO managing Director Engineer Thomas Odongo, meter vandalism accounts to over Sh 700,000 in lost revenue to KIWASCO, alongside water left flowing from broken meters in the last six months.
“We will be vigilant and we will be visiting all scrap metal dealers within the City to ensure that they are not involved in selling vandalized meters,” said Odongo.
The Company now wants residents of Kisumu to help by reporting cases of meter vandalism.
“Help us report these and other cases by sending a toll-free SMS to 20880 starting with the word KIWASCO, call our hotline 0721 757382 or Inbox us on face book,” appealed Kiwasco.
However it is not yet clear when the plastic meters will come into operation.
