Kitui Central lawmaker Makali Mulu has said that opposition supporters played a major role in pushing ODM leader Raila Odinga into his 2018 mock presidential swearing-in.
Speaking on Wednesday, the politician who is allied to the National Super Alliance (NASA) said that Raila, after losing in the 2017 poll, gave in to the pressure of his supporters.
Earlier the former Premier promised to take the oath should he not be announced the President, which he was not, after President Uhuru Kenyatta secured controversial reelection.
Mulu now says that Raila was under so much pressure after he promised to take an oath If Uhuru is sworn-in, that he decided to give in to appease the people who voted for him.
"The problem was the pressure from the voters (Shida ilikuwa ni pressure kutoka kwa wale walipiga kura)," he said on Radio Citizen's Pata Shika, on Wednesday night.
The MP said that the entire debate goes back to the current leadership structure, where even people who garnered millions of votes are just discarded and excluded after elections.
He stressed on the need for constitutional amendments that will give major political players a soft landing, even after losing, to avoid people resorting to dangerous actions.
The lawmaker also said that there is a need for changes to ensure that polls are done in a free and fair manner, where people can easily accept defeat if beaten.
"We want an arrangement where people can feel fairly defeated after a loss. Also, it's not right for people who have garnered millions of votes to be completely out. (Tunataka mtu akishindwa aonekane kweli ameshindwa. Na pia siO vyema mtu awe nje kabisa hata baada ya kupata mamilioni ya kura)," he added.
