President Uhuru Kenyatta has pledged to end Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) before he leaves office in 2022.
Speaking during the opening of the Women Deliver 2019 Conference in Canada, President Kenyatta said that his government doesn’t support FGM, adding that he is determined to bring the same to an end during his last term in office.
President Kenyatta attended the conference following an invitation from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
"I hope to put an end to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) practices by the end of my term as the President of Kenya,” he said.
Uhuru, who is committed to end graft in the government, also said that he is keen on the implementation of the 2/3 gender rule in Kenya.
He assured women that he is ready to defend their rights as long as he remains President.
“My government is keen on the involvement of women in leadership roles. We have advocated very strongly for the two-thirds gender bill. We will not relent, we will keep pushing this agenda,” tweeted State House.
His remarks come at a time when women activists have been fighting for equal opportunities in the government.
The activists have been calling upon the government to ensure that women’s voices are heard at different levels of leadership.
