Leaders from Ukambani region have condoled with families of the ten pupils who died in the fatal road accident in Kitui County.

They included former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu, and her Machakos counterpart Alfred Mutua.

Kalonzo, Ngilu, Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua and Mwingi Central MP Gideon Mulyungi on Sunday visited the survivors at Mwingi Level 4 Hospital giving them words of encouragement.

Kalonzo said the incident was sad and no words would comfort the parents.

Governor Mutua in a statement sent to the press said several measures need to be put in place to ensure students don't travel at night.

"My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of St.Gabriel school, I'm a parent and I know that losing a child leaves a gap that's is irreplaceable which is very hard to come to terms with," Mutua stated.

"Along with that there are measures needed to be put in place to ensure school kids don't travel at night to avoid such occurrences," he added.

The accident happened at Kanginga area in Mwingi approximately one kilometre from Mwingi town.

The children were coming from a school tour when the tragedy struck.

Their bus collided head-on with a lorry making it overturn and land into a ditch.

Eight pupils lost their lives on the spot while others sustained serious injuries.

Those injured were rushed to Mwingi Level 4 Hospital for treatment.
