Christmas has come as a blessing to Kitsao Kiponda, a disabled man from Jilore in Kilifi after a well-wisher bought him a wheelchair.

The 55-year-old physically challenged man has been bedridden for 16 years, after fracturing his leg while tapping coconut palm wine, an injury yet to heal to date.

Despite the main road being only 100 meters away from his home, Kiponda has not been able to see it for the entire time he had been confined to bed.

However, he now has a reason to smile after one Karisa Mulewa gave him a wheelchair as a Christmas gift. 

He says that the wheelchair has made his mobility possible again.

''Now I will be able to go where I want and see the things that I have not seen for many years," said Kiponda as quoted by the Star, who added that he has been depending on his wife to carry and clean him.

He now says that he can do with economic empowerment, and is now appealing to the government to assist him establish a business so that he can fend for his family.

His wife Zawadi Kitsao was equally happy, saying that with her husband able to move around, she can now focus on other things like doing her odd jobs.

''I am happy for getting the wheelchair together with flour, am grateful for all who planned this early Christmas for my family it will give me relief,'' she said.

Zawadi said that she at some point planned to divorce the husband over his condition, a thought she later dismissed.
