President Uhuru, who is currently serving his second and final term in power, was joined by several leaders including his deputy William Ruto as he laid his wreath at the Jomo Kenyatta mausoleum in Nairobi.

The Head of State, however, noted that this would be the last of such celebrations, adding that the decision was reached after consultation with the rest of the Kenyatta family.

“As president, I have consulted the family of Jomo Kenyatta and this will be the last celebration of Mzee. Moving forward, we will be celebrating him in our own ways,” he said.

Uhuru also took time to thank former presidents Daniel Arap Moi and Mwai Kibaki for leading the nation in celebrating his late father's past anniversaries.

He said he was proud of them and promised to live in accordance with his legacy.

“I thank the 2nd president who observed this day without fail, for 21 years. I thank Kibaki for faithfully doing so for 10 years,” he added.

He also urged Kenyans to remain united for the sake of economic growth during the remaining term of his leadership.
