ODM leader Raila Odinga has repeatedly confirmed true one of his oldest nicknames 'Agwambo', which translates to 'the mysterious one', in the course of his political life.
Not once did he manage to revive himself when everybody considered him done politically.
He has again done it and is currently among the most watched politicians ahead of the 2022 polls even after his loss in the 2017 presidential race, which many thought was his end.
But his latest stunt raises the question on what he really intends to achieve, now that he is working with the man he twice accused of rigging him; in the 2013 and 2017 polls.
Here are the possible reasons why Raila has humbled himself and agreed to work with Uhuru, even after years of being on the other side.
1. His own political interests
Raila has realized that on most occasions, you have to work with the government to succeed and having eyed the presidential seat for a long time, he has decided to do just that.
Having learnt that he will need the deep-state, which is on most occasions on the government side, he decided to come closer to Uhuru and by extension them, to negotiate for possible help.
He knows that those closer to the government are more likely to ascend to the presidency, and seems to have succeeded in penetrating into the heart if the president, judging by their closeness.
Raila lost in 2007, 2013 and 2017, all times to people in or close to the government, and has decided to try a new strategy this time.
To avoid being seen as an opportunist and to get the needed time to break the ruling Jubilee Party so as to create space for himself, he was clever enough to join Uhuru as early as 2018.
Therefore, his end game is to clinch the same swat he has been eyeing for years, only that he has changed the strategy.
2. Legacy
It's also possible that the veteran politician has caught the hint that he might never make it to the top seat and has therefore decided to work on leaving behind a legacy.
For many years, Raila has been seen as a leader who thrives in chaos and violence and who can never work with the government of the day, unless he is holding a leadership position.
To refute this as age catches up with him, he seems to have decided to work with Uhuru's government to redeem himself and convince Kenyans that he is not a bad man after all.
Its worth noting that his union with the president doesn't entail him being given any seat.
At the end of Uhuru's tenure, he hopes to have convinced Kenyans that he is not anti-development as others, especially those from DP Ruto's camp, have branded him.
3. The Luo—Kikuyu rivalry
The two leaders most likely came together to end the political suspicion that has existed between members of the Luo and Kikuyu communities, where they hail from.
The rivalry has been running since the fallout of their fathers; founding father Mzee Jomo Kenyatta and his first Vice President Jaramogi Oginga Odinga in 1966.
After failing to secure the presidency, after which he would have been in a better position to end the suspicion, which has been more intense among citizens, he decided to use Uhuru.
He wants to retire in peace after being seen to attempt to end the bad vice that was started by his father and that of Uhuru.
Even if he were to retire now, nobody would follow him to Opoda Farm to accuse him of doing nothing to end the rivalry in the many years he has been in the political scene.
