Even with the reportedly embezzlement of Sh48 million meant for construction of Kasarani Girls High School, the name of Elizabeth Ongoro is familiar with controversies.
Sleuths are allegedly being investigating Mrs Ongoro and her husband Ferdinand Masha over the funds, which were disbursed during her era as MP for Kasarani.
Mrs Ongoro is the elder sister to accomplished lawyer and Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo. In 2017, Ongoro excused herself from Parliament when Otiende was being vetted for Ombudsman job.
Born in 1969, Ongoro's name came into limelight when she beat several men in Kasarani during 2007 polls. ODM leader Raila Odinga went on to appoint her to cabinet as assistant minister.
During her period in Parliament, she was accused of battering her husband, an allegation she vehemently denied in an interview.
“I almost lost the baby because of the shock. I went through so much trauma, I almost resigned from my seat,” she recalled in the TV interview reviewed.
“For somebody to accuse you, a woman who is eight months pregnant, of battering a very physically fit man, it was so hilarious.”
In 2013, she was again involved in a scuffle with then ODM Executive Director Janet Ong'era over nomination slots. She had lost bid to contest for Nairobi gubernatorial polls following the decision by ODM to pick Evans Kidero.
Despite the scuffle, Ongoro was nominated to the Senate. In 2017, Ongoro was also involved in yet another scuffle during Ruaraka nominations.
She accused TJ Kajwang' of rigging her during nominations. Her supporters stormed Orange House where they beat Executive Director Oduor Ong'wen among other officials.
Following the controversy, she defected from ODM to Amani National Congress. She however lost to Kajwang' during 2017 polls.
