A class seven pupil at Rairi Primary School, in Migori County, was stabbed to death on Saturday night at Rapogi trading centre.
According to a watchman who works at a pub which is located near the crime scene, the incident took place at around 11:00 pm.
The watchman further told the police that he saw the assailant chasing the 17-year-old girl before ending her life.
The suspect escaped on foot.
Efforts to save the girl were futile as she had lost too much blood from the stabbing on her neck and chest.
Police officers from Uriri, Migori County have consequently launched an investigation into the incident to establish the identity of the suspect and arrest him.
Uriri Sub County Police Commander Peter Njoroge pointed that the hunt for the suspect was on as they hope to make arrests.
“We have not made any arrest in connection to the incident but we will soon get to the bottom of the matter. It is just a matter of time before the suspect is arrested,” Njoroge said as quoted by Nation.
Residents at Rapogi trading centre raised concern over the growing insecurity. They blamed the police officers for not being on vigilant.
“The Saturday incident is a clear indication of an upsurge of insecurity in this area, we don’t understand why police officers don’t conduct patrols,” Duncan Ochieng, a resident in the area, stated.
The body of the girl was transported to Rap Com Hospital mortuary in Awendo sub-county.
