Nyanza consists of six counties, namely Siaya, Migori, Homa Bay, Kisii, Kisumu and Nyamira.
However, some of the regions would do with more counties for better leadership and growth.
Here is why Nyanza needs at least two more counties if residents are to reap the maximum benefits.
1. The Kuria factor
There is a dire need for the Kuria people, currently occupying two constituencies of Migori county to be allocated their county to enable them to have a fair say on matters political issues.
As things stand now, the Kuria people are completely dominated by the Luo people to an extent that they cannot have any say in matters county leadership.
This prompted the Luo people to proceed to take both the governor and senator seat in the 2017 polls, in contravention to the initial agreement that the seats would be shared by the two groups.
Tharaka Nithi has three constituencies; Maara, Chuka/Igambangombe and Tharaka, why not Kuria which has two constituencies and appears overshadowed by the Luo.
While politics is all about competition, one cannot be expected to compete against a group of 50 persons and still deliver a win or a draw.
Also, in such instances, the governor is likely to be tempted to discriminate or unfairly treat the minority, well aware that he can win with or without their backing.
2. Kisumu city
Kisumu City should be separated from the larger Kisumu County, for it to realise its maximum potential.
Just like Nairobi, Kisumu city is a densely populated cosmopolitan centre and one of the three most important urban centres in the county, which requires special attention.
It's unrealistic to expect the same governor to handle flood menaces and agricultural issues of the surrounding areas and still give the many city dwellers value for their taxes.
This is the reason why the sugar sector keeps ailing, and at the same, time city dwellers are lamenting of insufficient trading centres, as the governor's attention is divided.
Similarly, there is dire need to allocate more funds to the cities in Nyanza region, for faster and more steady development.
