Deputy President William Ruto has not been among the loved politicians in Luo Nyanza, most likely as a result of his deemed rivalry with area kingpin and opposition leader Raila Odinga.
Consequently, Luos have since composed nicknames seeking to describe him without raising suspicion or giving themselves away when gossiping about him.
His is how they refer to him.
1. Namba ariyo
This translates to 'number two', a nickname given in relation to his placement as the second in command, and holder of the second highest office in the nation.
2. Jalup Ker
'Ker' is the official name for 'King' in the Luo vocabulary, and 'jalup' translating to 'deputy' or 'follower'.
And with the Ker being President Uhuru Kenyatta in this context, Ruto, being his deputy, is Jalup Ker.
This is his official name.
3. Jachak
'Chak' translates to milk, one of the most loved foods among the Kalenjin, the place Ruto comes from.
Ruto therefore has been nicknamed 'jachak' (milk lover) a name used mostly in political chatting places, and newspaper vending stations to prevent suspicion.
However, none of these names have a malicious intent, as it is normal for politicians to have a nickname in each part of the nation.
Luo kingpin Raila Odinga has himself been nicknamed Arap Mibei in Rift Valley.
