Nairobi Governor Mike has been arrested in Voi, following an order by the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji.
Confirming the arrest, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Friday said Sonko attempted to escape before being arrested.
"EACC Kenya confirms that Nairobi City County Governor Mike Sonko Mbuvi has been arrested while escaping arrest at a road block in Voi and is being transferred to Nairobi to face charges of corruption and economic crime," EACC tweeted.
Earlier today while addressing the media, Haji said his office has gathered enough evidence needed to prosecute the governor and other county employees over the alleged graft.
The DPP further noted that Sonko and other accused persons will face charges of conspiracy to commit economic crimes, willful failure to comply with the law, and conflict of interest.
"Investigation into these crimes have been challenging because of the repeated attempt by the accused to obstruct the cause of the investigations by deploying investigation tactics in addition to using goons to threaten law enforcement officials carrying out their constitutional mandate,” Haji said.
