This is after the county government of Uasin Gishu ordered that all private slaughterhouses be shut down.

Uasin Gishu governor Daniel Chemno issued the order during this years' Jamhuri day celebrations at the 64 stadium in Eldoret.

The decision comes barely a fortnight after six carcases and four weakly cows were discovered in a private slaughterhouse on the outskirts of Eldoret town.

Chemno further expressed concerns over increased livestock theft cases across the county.

“This has not been a problem for us but it is slowly coming back,” he noted.

“We are now making it mandatory that anyone transporting a cow or sheep must not only have a letter from the veterinary services but also a confirmation from the area chief allowing the transport of the livestock,” added the deputy county boss.

Similar sentiments were echoed by the Uasin Gishu County Commissioner Abdi Hassan who also put on notice unscrupulous traders who sell dead cows to slaughterhouses.

Abdi noted that those selling dead or weakly cows will face the full force of the law.
