On Friday, Raila Odinga had launched the dredger leased from Uganda which is expected to complete the job in 18 months time.

And on Saturday, Uhuru, in the company of Raila, sneaked to the point without outriders to the port where they spent at least one hour inspecting it.

"I saw more people join the President at the port. They included (Jubilee Secretary General Raphael) Tuju, Deputy Governor Mathews Owilli and Bob Madanji (County Chief of Protocol)," a bodaboda operator told the Standard.

At the Kisumu port, the President was shown the 4,000-tonne dredger launched by Raila on Friday. He inspected the port and was shocked by the massive invasion by the water hyacinth.

“The President was shocked that he could not see water, as the weed had covered every bit of the lake. He said an urgent and deliberate decision must be made to save the lake and the port. He looked at the prototype hyacinth harvester and said it was too small,” said an official at the site.

Earlier, the two leaders had attended the the burial of Bruce Odhiambo, the former Youth Enterprise Fund CEO at Muhoroni in Kisumu. The impromptu Port tour was organised by Raila without the knowledge of the president.
