President Uhuru Kenyatta announced on Saturday why the copyright board will be moved from the Attorney General's office to the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
Addressing mourners during the funeral ceremony of Kikuyu Benga musician John DeMathew, the head of state explained that the Attorney General's office does not have the technical know-how to deal with copyright issues.
It is only the ICT Ministry that has the technical capacity to identify copyright violations.
"Secondly, we have decided that the copyright office is not where it should be because it is under the attorney general's office and the attorney general and his people don't have the technical know-how to know what has been uploaded in machines and why (Ya pili, tumekubaliana ya kwamba ile ofisi ya copyright tumeonelea ya kwamba haiko mahali inastahili kwa sababu sasa ofisi ya copyright iko kwa ofisi ya attorney general na attorney general na watu yake hawana njia ya kujua ni nini imewekwa kwa mitambo kwa nini), " the head of state said.
The major announcement came amid public concern over claims that the Music Copyright Society of Kenya has been shortchanging artists on royalties.
Uhuru Kenyatta assured that he would work to ensure that artistes receive what is due to them.
