Retired teachers have reasons to smile after the government promised to pay them Sh.1 million each. Over 5000 teachers are expected to benefit from the payment after waiting for more than 16  years for the same.

The teachers who will benefit from the benefit include those who retired in 2013. Director of Pensions Shem Nyakutu has confirmed the new development. He noted that the amount is expected to be paid as accumulated arrears for the teachers. 

The payment was reached after the pensioner revised the pension dating back to 2003 before they were awarded the lump sum. It also emerged that some of the pensioners no long have Identity cards while some of them are not Kenyans they have been remitting payments towards the scheme.

 “It is true some of the pensioners do not have national identity cards. In fact, some are not even Kenyans, but we have been paying them because they are legitimate pensioners and they are in our payroll,” he said.

The teachers who are set to benefit from the scheme have been lamenting about negligence. They have been asking the government to ensure they get justice from the pension schemes. Over months, they have been organizing meetings to pledge for assistance to get their pay
