We cannot know everything, no-matter how bright we are.

Is there a story unfolding in your community? Let Hivisasa know

The sad part is that we cannot at times explain the reason behind things that happen around us on a daily basis.

Some of these are things we own, but cannot explain their roles.

Here are some of the things you have definitely seen and used but do not know their functions.

1.Donut hole

Everyone loves donuts, the maandazis  with a hole in the middle, referred to as ‘mofara’ in some areas.

However, most people think that the hole could either be there for a perfect grip or is a trick by the producer to save on dough.

The product came to existence hundreds of years back, when there were no baking cans, making it hard to get the edges and the middle of such products well-cooked.

Bakers then decided to bring and edgeless product with no middle part, the culture remaining intact to date.

2. Holes in padlocks

Most padlocks have a deep tiny hole next to the keyhole. The hole is used to lubricate the interior of the padlock in case of any rust.

This is because the padlocks are usually forgotten on our doors and gates, exposing them to rain.

This might with time lead to rusting which will in turn make it hard to open them using their keys.

However, once the oil finds its way in, it again opens without any trouble.

3.Stickers on fruits.

In Kenya, apples and imported oranges have for some time now been spotted with some stickers on them, a branding most Kenyans associate with the company or producer of the fruit.

However, it has another role; if the sticker has four digits, then the fruit has been sprayed with pesticides before sale .

If it has five digits, the first one being nine, then the fruit is completely organic and if it has five digits and the first is five, then it is a product of genetic modification.
