Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has received backing over his rejection to the planned relocation of Mombasa Port services to Naivasha when the Standard Gauge Railway line reaches Nakuru.
National Super Alliance (NASA) strategist David Ndii on Monday said the planned relocation of the port services to Nakuru County will deny Mombasa and in extension Coast region youth employment opportunities and this, he said will entirely cripple development in the region.
"The port of Mombasa is a natural resource to the people of Mombasa," Ndii said during an interview on KTN television.
"Moving the port inland will no longer benefit the people of Mombasa. It will be moving jobs and the economy of Mombasa. Will these people be able to follow their jobs?"
Joho has been at the forefront accusing the Jubilee administration specifically President Uhuru Kenyatta over the plan which the government denies.
"The movement of port operations from Mombasa to Naivasha will make Mombasa an economic wasteland in five years time," Joho who is now serving his second term said during campaigns for the August 8, 2017 general elections.
"They want to control all sectors of the economy and continue keeping us poor so that whenever we want help we go begging from them. We will not cease from opposing any move aimed at taking away port services from Mombasa to Naivasha."
