Kisumu County security team has imposed a ban on night music popularly known as Disco Matanga.
The move, Standard reports, seeks to curb rising cases of robbery and murder.
County Commissioner Susan Kariuki said that night discos at funerals or social gatherings have been a hub for organized criminal activities targeting residents.
Speaking on Thursday at Jomo Kenyatta Sports ground in Kisumu town during Jamhuri Day celebrations, Kariuki warned organizers and those attending the Disco Matangas that they risk arrest and prosecution.
Almost 80 per cent of vehicular homicide and burglary recorded with the police in Kisumu happen during discos.
The county commissioner said Disco Matanga is the root cause of insecurity and immorality in the area, adding that there are negative peer influence and drugs at such events.
“It is in these discos where youth commit felonies such as murder, assault or battery,” said Kariuki as quoted by Standard.
Assistant county commissioners, chiefs and their assistants have been urged to ensure that the ban is enforced within the lakeside county.
