Police in Kisii county have dismissed claims they have been demanding for bribes from soapstone traders in Tabaka.
Tabaka police boss Ndong'a Nanok said the claims by levelled against the police by soapstone traders are false and meant to taint the name of police officers.
"Residents who are failing to meet the business requirements should stop spreading lies. No police officer has ever demanded a bribe from soapstone traders or workers as being claimed," he noted.
Nanok appealed to any resident with evidence to report to relevant authorities.
"No resident will be intimidated or blackmailed by police. Anyone with information and evidence about the bribery claims should report to police, EACC or DCI for necessary action to be taken against such officers but, I want to reiterate that no police officer has collected bribe," he stated.
He said the Friday protests was meant to damage the reputation of the officers in the area.
For the better part of Friday, soapstone workers went on a rampage before police officers shot in the air to disperse them.
