The claim of responsibility came on Saturday, according to a piece on the New York Times news portal.

Terrorism experts say that the attack ranks as the deadliest in a decade.

Mali has suffered a series of sustained terror attacks since 2012 when Islamic insurgents run over the northern part of the country.

The violence in the north has been massive to the point of spilling to other countries neighbouring Mali.

Confirming the deadly attack, the Malian authorities said that it was a terrorist attack.

The European Union (EU) reacted to the attack in a statement, conveying its condolences to the families of the victims.

It said that it would continue supporting the West African country with all the assistance it requires to re-establish complete control of its territory.

"The European Union stands by the government and the Malian nation to counter this serious violence," the EU said in a statement quoted by CNN

"We continue to engage in support of Mali to allow the country to re-establish the full authority of the state over all its territory, to assure its development and the prosperity of its citizens," it added.

The EU has been training Malian security forces in a bid to help the country's government to fend off the threat posed by rebels.
