A controversial and an outspoken Kiambu County Governor Ferdinand Waititu's political career hangs precariously on court and senate's hands.
Kiambu County Assembly impeached Waititu over alleged gross misconduct and abuse of office for among other issues, allegedly influencing the award of lucrative tenders to companies associated with his immediate family and close relatives.
The impeachment motion will now proceed to the senate which will set up a special committee to investigate the grounds on which impeachment was effected. At senate, only 24 senators will be required to vote in favour of the motion. If the Senate passes the motion then Waititu will cease to be Kiambu county Governor.
However, Waititu can move to court to challenge the senate ruling. If court validates the Senate's impeachment, Waititu's integrity to hold public office will be dented and he will be thrown into political oblivion.
If Court and senate validate Kiambu county Assembly's impeachment motion, Baba Yao will go into the records as the first governor to be impeached successfully since the inception of devolution, this is after Martin Wambora's impeachment flopped.
However, if the senate invalidates Waititu's impeachment motion. His political muscles will surely strengthen and his 2022 political stars will undoubtedly shine.
