A one-day old baby has been rescued from a church latrine in Yatta, Machakos County.

Kithimani assistant county commissioner Joseph Ng'anga said he was notified about the the incident that occurred in Kamweani village by members of the public on Wednesday.

"I was called and told that a child had been thrown in a pit latrine at Kamweani Salvation Army church,I immediately called and told the residents to do what they could to rescue the child," Ng'ang'a said. 

"The residents did all they could and after thirty minutes, the baby was retrieved alive from the pit latrine," he added.

The child was rushed to Matuu Level 4 Hospital for medication.

Ng'ang'a thanked the residents for turning up in numbers to help the child.

He said police had launched investigations into the matter and were pursuing the child's mother.

"Police have began investigating who the mother is and once she is found, she will face the full force of the law," he said.

He urged residents to provide information that may hasten the investigations.

"Anyone with information that may aid us in locating the mother of the kid should report to the nearest police station, we will take every information with seriousness," Ng'ang'a said.
