Visiting Uganda President Yoweri Museveni could leave Nairobi tonight a disappointed man following protests by Kenyatta University students who temporarily disrupted his speech on Friday.
A video making rounds on social media shows students singing pro-Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bibi Wine'a slogans in solidarity with the youthful Kyaddondo East MP who has been at loggerheads with the veteran leader.
The angry students are seenrunning outside the hall where Museveni was delivering his public lecture, temporarily bringing businesses into standstill. They are also yelling at the president to respect human rights and stepdown.
Museveni,74, took over power in 1986 following a coup and was credited by Western powers for bringing stability in the East African nation. But his continued stay in power has triggered deadly protests in Kampala.
Last year Mr Bobi Wine, a celebrated musician as well, led protests which saw him badly clobbered by the police. He was flown to the US for special treatment.
Recently, he toured Nairobi where he was hosted by youthful MPs in Nairobi led by Embakasi East MP Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino. He even addressed a public rally at Jacaranda grounds in which thousands turned up.
President Museveni, a key ally of President Uhuru Kenyatta, has been in the country since Wednesday. On Friday, he toured Jomo Kenyatta's grave before meeting retired President Daniel Moi at Kabarnet Gardens in Nairobi.
The events at Kenyatta University were preceeded by social media posts from activist Boniface Mwangi, who challenged students to 'give Museveni hell during the address'. Mwangi is a close friend of Mr Bobi Wine.
Despite the disruptions, Museveni, who has declared interest to defend his seat in 2020, went ahead with the address. He will face Bobi Wine and veteran opposition leader and his former doctor Kizza Bezzigye in the race.
