The national amputee team to the 2018 Amputee World Cup in Mexico beat USA 2-1 in their second Group B match on Tuesday morning despite being reduced to six men.
The team had lost its opening match 4-1 to Turkey, but their win has however elicited debate after pictures circulated online of the team donned in yellow "Team Sonko" branded jerseys instead of the national colours.
The team faced a lot of financial challenges in their quest to represent Kenya at the Amputee World Cup.
Governor Sonko came to the aid of the financially troubled Amputee team after he facilitated their allowances to participate in the event in South America and he also purchased kits for the team which failed to get national team jerseys for the World Cup.
The tournament that kicked-off on October 24, ends on November 5, 2018. Kenya played at the last edition of the World Cup in 2014, where it emerged in position 17 out of 24 countries.
Hosts Mexico, England, Ireland, and Uruguay are the other members of the “group of death.”
The team faced a lot of challenges to represent Kenya in the event and relied on well-wishers for support with the Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko donating their kit.
