Youths from Garissa County have been urged to enroll for various technical courses in the youth polytechnics available, in a bid to gain relevant skills needed in life.
Speaking at a Garissa hotel on Tuesday, during a youth programme sponsored by the European Union and implemented by the Aga Khan Foundation, Garissa Youth and Gender Executive Zeinab Digale said technical education is key for personal growth.
Digale decried low enrollment in technical institutions, adding that the county has four vocational training institutions, which only have 700 students.
“It worries me that despite the huge investment in technical training from the government with the help of the county and other partners, our numbers remain very low.”
“As a community we need to change our mindset that the only gainful employment can come from white-collar jobs. The bitter reality is that those jobs are fast diminishing,” she said as quoted by the Star.
She said the county has several vacancies in the technical field which the youth should apply for.
