Sixteen ex-prostitutes and brewers have graduated with skills and knowledge of making fire less cookers in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.
SOLASA Education Centre director Elizabeth Nyambura said the project is envisioned to ensuring that the women quit commercial sex trade for alternative means of earning their money decently.
“The women who have graduated today come from very poor backgrounds and had lost hope in life. That’s why we nominated, enrolled them in our school and trained them on the same. We want their lives to be transformed,” Nyambura said.
Nyambura spoke during the graduation ceremony at the centre located in Kisumu Ndogo estate on Sunday.
She said most women from the region become teenage mothers at tender ages having failed to go to school.
Nyambura revealed that such women cannot afford even a single meal in a day since they lack necessary skills and education required hence unemployable.
“It is sad that a 17-year-old girl has 3-4 children with no income. That's why we came in and decided to come to their rescue. I am happy when I see them taking care of their bills,” Nyambura added.
Nyambura urged the government to fund her organization to enable her assist more women languishing in abject poverty in the county.
She said she has no adequate resources to fund the project given that the numbers of women in need are overwhelming.
"The women only pay Sh1,000 as commitment fees, which is a drop in the ocean to cater for their upkeep," she said.
Nyambura said more than 400 women have benefited from the project, 98 percent have either been employed or started their own businesses.
She said apart from making fire less cookers, they are also taught on sewing, handcraft, among other skills.
