Couples will also be heading in Mombasa for a number of reasons including honeymoon for newlyweds. More so, beaches are one of the places that are much visited during such holidays.

However, regardless of the presence of security personnel at the beaches, some people will never hesitate to compromise other people's security. Some idle youth will try to steal from newcomers.

The following measures can be taken for one to stay secured at the beach, more specifically at public beaches where attendance is never limited.

1. Keep your belongings under the care of someone

These includes phones and handbags. There are those who charge a small fee for these service. Do not just leave your belongings at the shore then make your way into the water, besides thieves, the water waves will be another source of harm.

2. Use floaters

If you are not good at swimming, make use of readily available floaters which go at Sh50 to Sh100.

3. Beware of 'mateja'

These are criminal gangs who visit the beach to steal from unsuspecting newcomers. They walk in groups of at least five people, few metres apart. When one takes your phone or even your wallet, the other ones will come in and pretend they want to help you get back your phone. They will only get the phone from first snatcher and make their way from the crime scene.

4. Always be with somebody to watch over you

This is very important because he or she will be your third eye who can raise alarm when anything wrong happens.
