Former powerful Attorney General Charles Njonjo on Wednesday celebrated his 99th birthday.
Popularly known as 'Sir' Charles or the Duke of Kabeteshire, Njonjo, has also served as Member of Parliament for Kikuyu constituency and as Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs during the tenure of retired President Daniel Arap Moi.
The Kiambu politician was a close ally and confidant of Kenya's founding President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta whom he served as his AG from 1963 to August 22, 1978, the day the Head of State passed on.
After retiring from active politics, Njonjo ventured into business where he has made a huge fortune and in the process building a big name for himself in the corporate world.
On Wednesday during his birthday, Kenyans joined hands to celebrate the remarkable contributions Njonjo has made in various areas.
"99 Years old today and counting.......Happy Birthday to a living LEGEND and ICON, Sir Charles Njonjo, the DUKE of Kabeteshire....one more and you get to that CENTURY Milestone...LONG LIVE!!" tweeted popular TV journalist Jeff Koinange.
"Happy Birthday Sir Charles Njonjo, The Duke of Kabeteshire. The Duke of Soyshire prays for your continued good health as you turn 99 years," posted city lawyer Nelson Havi.
However, former Nairobi gubernatorial candidate Miguna Miguna had a different message for the former Kikuyu legislator.
The outspoken lawyer accused Njonjo and a section of politicians who served in past governments of being behind most of the problems the country was facing and slammed Kenyans who sent happy birthday wishes to the former AG.
"Charles Njonjo, Daniel Moi, Jomo Kenyatta, Nicholas Biwott, @UKenyatta and all their surrogates and collaborators represent everything that is wrong with Kenya. Njonjo should be spending his 99th birthday in prison. Those celebrating Njonjo's birthday are Kenya's problems," Miguna posted on Twitter.
