It is now several weeks after two Cuban doctors attached to the Mandera County Referral Hospital went missing.

Doctors Herrera Correa, a general practitioner and Landy Rodríguez Hernández, a surgeon are yet to be found.

Earlier reports indicated that the duo was abducted by suspected Al-Shabaab insurgents who immediately crossed borders to Somalia. Hours later, the Kenyan government launched a multi-agency search and rescue mission, with local Mandera elders offering to negotiate for their safety and unconditional release.

Even as the government maintain that the Al-Shabaab was responsible for the abduction, the terrorist cell has never issued a statement claiming responsibility. This now raises more questions than answers on who might have orchestrated the abduction.

As it is at the moment, the Kenyan authorities are no longer talking of the incident, leaving citizens guessing on what might have happened to the Cuban medics.

That a Voice of America (VOA) journalist claimed the abductees were being held in El Adde puts the competence of Kenya's investigative agencies into sharp focus.

It would be more prudent if the country's security organs came out clean on the issue, and let Kenyans know if the duo is still alive. If so, they must also be specific on their whereabouts and the measures in place to secure their release.
