Mutua is among the few politicians who have made public their intentions to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta, three years in advance.

Speaking on K24's Punchline on Sunday, the second-term county boss portrayed an image of a man who cannot be swayed, saying that its his time to take a shot at the top slot.

"I am going to run for President in 2022. It is my time," Mutua told Anne Kiguta.

He said he has since raised the issue with ODM leader Raila Odinga, another long-time presidential hopeful, who promised to back his presidential dream.

He said that the former Prime Minister also advised him to start the process from the first level; by making himself popular with the Kenyans ahead of the main contest.

"I have told Raila Odinga that I will run for President. He laughed about it. He asked me to hit the ground with campaigns. He promised to support my dream [of becoming a president]," he added.

Mutua is likely to face off with among others, Deputy President William Ruto, who is also eyeing the seat.
