Estranged former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa has moved in speed to 'defend' his Friday's dismissal by President Uhuru Kenyatta, insisting that he has a right to hire and fire ministers.
While it was expected that Uhuru could reorganize his cabinet, Echesa had not featured in graft scandals, despite often featuring in Political duels.
At Matungu on Saturday, the former Minister however, insisted that the president did not give any explanation and that he learnt his predicament on TV just like any Kenyan.
"It’s the prerogative of the President to reorganise his Cabinet the way he wants. Constitutionally, the President has the mandate and power to hire and fire,” said Echesa.
“The President knew why he appointed me to serve and Ibelieve he had a reason to ask me to step aside.”
Echesa, who became the first ever person from Wanga sub tribe of Luhya to be a minister, became also the first ever to be formally dismissed by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Previously, Uhuru had kicked ministers out of cabinet without formally stating their fate, with the current Kajiado governor Joseph Lenku being one of the casualties.
Local media reported on Saturday that Uhuru could sack more ministers with sources indicating that five are on the radar of National Intelligence Service for graft related scams.
