Like any president, having a trusted physician is mandatory. The doctor is responsible for coordinating other physicians when one is under medication.

Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, despite having had several government doctors looking after him, always trusted Dr Njoroge Mungai and Dr Gikonyo Kiano, both goverment ministers.

For Mzee Moi's Kenya's second President, Dr David Silverstein has been coordinating all matters pertaining his health.

While confirming that Moi is admitted at Nairobi Hospital, long-serving press secretary Lee Njiru said the retired president will only leave hospital upon recommendation by Silverstein.

“The true position is that Mzee Moi is in hospital being attended to by a professional medical team led by his personal physician, Dr David Silverstein. He is alert and conscious of his surroundings," Mr Lee Njiru, the former Head of State's press secretary, said in a statement.

Tuesday, a source at the hospital said Mzee Moi was “on restricted visits at the moment, and his doctor is currently keeping an eye on his lungs”.

A cardiologist by practice, Dr David Silverstein has been monitoring Mzee Moi for over three decades now. He has offices along Argwings Kodhek road in Nairobi.

He was first admitted as a doctor in 1979 in the United States of America before moving to Kenya shortly afterwards. Dr Silverstein treats at Nairobi Hospital.

During his free time, he takes medical lectures for students at the University of Nairobi, Chiromo. Medical students from the institution often encounter him during training.
