The Deputy President William Ruto is yet to honor his promise to the national football team, Harambee Stars. The DP had pledged Sh50 million if they won against Ethiopia.
Harambee thrashed the visitors 3-0 but they will only get the money if FIFA maintains its ban on Sierra Leon due to government interference in footballing matters.
In case FIFA finds that its minimum conditions are met and lift its ban, Ghana will get six points from the two legs they were to play with Sierra Leon.
The schedule was on 11 October in West Africa, Ghana and a return fixture in Sierra Leon on 14 October. Such a decision will gift Ghana a group leader.
The DP took to Twitter to congratulate Harambee Stars for their stellar performance. He also lauded the great support they received after entry fee was scrapped.
@WilliamsRuto posted, “The boys have done it! A momentous occasion as Harambee Stars thump Ethiopia 3-0 to all but guarantee a place at 2019 Africa Cup of Nations showpiece. Tactical discipline, sterling team effort, fantastic home support, and belief carry the day. Let’s savor a great win. #AFCON2019Q.
On his part, the Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko honored his pledge. He posted on his twitter account that he had wired Sh 3 million to the national team.
@MikeSonko wrote, “I honored my promise of Sh3m cash reward to #HarambeeStars after their 3-0 win against Ethiopia in the AFCON qualifier match at Kasarani.”
