Barely one year ago, they were reading from the same page. But today, they are pulling in different directions. Who will blink first?

Whereas Kingi has of late been 'operating with one leg' outside ODM, at least going by his recent political activities where it is claimed that he is warming up to Deputy President William Ruto, Joho remains a key cog in the party’s leadership where he is the deputy party leader. However, they are both chasing the same ambition. The presidency.

As a true advocate of Coast unity, Kingi may be keen to launch a new political party to rival ODM and fight the political space in the country’s competitive politics.

On Saturday, he hosted a group of MPs from the region where he defended the perceived ODM rebels amid plans by the party to discipline them. Could it be a strategy to win them?

Banking on the populous, Mijikenda community, Kingi may have a precious head start in his emerging battle with Joho to control Coast politics. But being a shrewd politician with his own strategies, the Mombasa Governor may not go down easily without fighting back.
