The senator of Elgeyo Marakwet Kipchumba Murkomen has weighed in on the vexed question on whether Deputy President Dr William Ruto serves at the pleasure of President Uhuru Kenyatta.
In a strongly-worded tweet on Monday, the Senate majority leader said that the deputy president is not an employee of the head of state.
The barbed tweet was fired at the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, Murang'a Woman Rep Sabina Chege and nominated legislator Maina Kamanda.
"To ODM+Sabina Kamanda: Our response is thus: The Deputy President is not an employee of the President. They willingly came together, jointly employed by the people of Kenya. The respect you are demanding for the President is the same respect the President is demanding for his Deputy, " the Elgeyo Marakwet senator said.
Murkomen's tweet underscores the growing divisions in the Jubilee party, fueling speculation that the party will not survive until 2022.
The DP has long been accused of disrespecting the head of state, a charge that he has strongly denied.
Critics contend that by holding political rallies across the county, DP Ruto is disrespecting President Uhuru who has called on politicians to focus on working for the Kenyan people instead of engaging in politics before 2022.
