For over 10 years now, Luo Nyanza has been an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party stronghold under the leadership of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

The massive support for the party has made it such that capturing the ODM party ticket in nominations is almost a sure bet to being elected.

Luo Nyanza comprises of Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay and Migori Counties. But last year, up to five men managed to be elected Members of Parliament despite not vying on the Orange Party ticket.

Kisumu East Legislator Shakeel Shabbir defended his seat as an independent candidate defeating ODM’s Nicholas Oricho. Shabbir had lost to Oricho during the hotly contested ODM party nominations.

MP Olago Oluoch also defended his seat despite vying on a Ford Kenya Party ticket in Kisumu West Constituency, an area perceived to be an ODM zone.

In Migori County, Peter Francis Masara won the Suna East MP seat as an independent candidate after losing in the ODM party primaries to Nicholas Obongo.

Masara handed Obong'o a sound defeat during the general elections.

Still in Migori, Marwa Kitayama and Mathias Robi won the Kuria East and Kuria West MP seats on the Jubilee Party ticket.
